Stuck at 1/2 chests at Traveler's Camp in Windrose? You're not alone. Here's exactly how to find the buried second chest — step by step.
If you've visited the Traveler's Camp in Windrose and walked away with that annoying 1/2 icon still showing on your map, you're in very good company. This is one of the most commonly missed secrets in the game, and it stumps players at every stage — including people who've been playing for hours and cleared everything else without a problem.
The reason it trips people up is simple: the second chest isn't sitting around waiting to be opened. It's buried underground, and the game gives you the clue to find it inside the first chest — if you actually stop to read it.
Here's how to find both chests and clear Traveler's Camp completely.
What You'll Need Before You Start
Before heading to the Traveler's Camp, make sure you have one thing sorted:
A Shovel. You cannot dig up the hidden chest without one. If you don't have a Shovel yet, craft one before making the trip — showing up without it means you'll be able to read the clue but won't be able to do anything about it. Once you have the Shovel equipped, press X (or Z depending on your configuration) to cycle through its modes: Weapon, Dig, Raise, and Flatten. You want it set to Dig mode before you go looking for the chest, otherwise nothing will happen when you reach the right spot.
Step 1: Find the First Chest at Traveler's Camp
Head to the Traveler's Camp. On Tutorial Island, this is located in the southwest section of the map. The camp itself isn't hard to spot — there's a tent, and right beside it you'll see a Decrepit Chest sitting in plain view. This is the first of the two chests and it's the obvious one.
Open it. You'll receive a Curio called Twist of Fancy — this is a journal entry, a note left behind by whoever used to camp here.
Step 2: Read the Note — This Is the Key Step Most Players Skip
Here's where the majority of players go wrong. The Twist of Fancy isn't just flavor text. It contains the actual clue you need to find the second chest.
The relevant part of the note reads:
"I'll bury the excess gear nearby, beneath the tree marked with a red flag. Maybe I'll visit this place again someday."
That's your clue. The second chest is buried underground beneath a tree that has a red scarf tied around it. The note tells you exactly what to look for — most players just don't read it and then spend twenty minutes digging holes in the wrong places.
Step 3: Find the Red Scarf Tree
Leave the tent area and head directly west of the camp. You're looking for a bare, leafless tree with a red scarf (or red cloth/flag) tied around its trunk. It stands out once you know what you're looking for — the red fabric against the pale bare branches is fairly visible once you're scanning for it.
A few things to keep in mind while searching:
The tree is always west of the camp, but the exact distance can vary slightly
It's a leafless tree — not a full green one, a bare one with no foliage
The red scarf is wrapped around the trunk itself, so look at ground level, not up in the branches
If you're struggling to spot it, look for the tree that looks most out of place or dead compared to the surrounding area
This same mechanic applies to all 7 Traveler's Camps in Windrose, not just the Tutorial Island one. Every camp has a buried chest under a red-scarf tree somewhere nearby, and the note in the first chest always gives you the same clue. Once you've done it once, you'll know what to look for at every subsequent camp.
Step 4: Dig Up the Chest
Once you've found the red scarf tree, stand directly at its base. Make sure your Shovel is in Dig mode — you'll know you're in the right place when you see an orange circle appear on the ground at the base of the tree. That orange circle is your confirmation that there's something buried there.
Start digging. After a few seconds you'll see sparkles appear — that's the game's visual cue that you're about to hit the loot. Keep going and the chest will surface.
Open it. The loot inside is randomized each run, so what you get will vary — players have reported everything from Homemade Gunpowder and Healing Potions to Elixirs and Gold items. Whatever it is, your map will now tick over to 2/2 and the Traveler's Camp will be fully cleared.
Quick Troubleshooting
I found the tree but nothing happens when I dig: Check your Shovel mode. If you're in Weapon mode, hitting the ground does nothing. Press X to cycle to Dig mode and try again.
I can't find the tree anywhere west of the camp: Expand your search radius a little — walk in a wide arc westward rather than a straight line. The tree is always in the general western direction but the exact placement can vary. Remember you're looking for a bare, leafless tree specifically.
I don't have a Shovel yet: You'll need to craft one before you can complete this. Come back once you have it — the camp will still be sitting at 1/2 waiting for you.
I'm at a different Traveler's Camp and the note doesn't mention the red flag: The solution is still the same. Not every camp's note includes the red flag clue explicitly, but every camp uses the same mechanic — look west of the camp for a leafless tree with red cloth tied around it. The note text changes but the solution doesn't.
Summary
Go to Traveler's Camp (southwest of Tutorial Island)
Open the Decrepit Chest beside the tent — get the Twist of Fancy note
Read the note — it tells you the second chest is buried under a tree marked with a red flag
Head west of the camp and look for a bare leafless tree with a red scarf tied to it
Equip your Shovel and switch to Dig mode (press X to cycle)
Stand at the base of the tree — wait for the orange circle to appear on the ground
Dig until you see sparkles, then collect the loot
Camp clears to 2/2 ✓
This applies to all 7 Traveler's Camps scattered across Windrose — same mechanic, same red scarf tree, every time. Once you've got the pattern down you'll never get stuck at 1/2 again.
